The Lion King at KeyBank State Theatre
The Lion King brings Disney's celebrated story of Simba to the stage through music, puppetry, masks, and theatrical spectacle. The Broadway musical opened in 1997, with a book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi, music by Elton John and others, and lyrics by Tim Rice. Julie Taymor's distinctive staging helped transform the animated film into a live production known for its African-inspired visual design.
The musical's score includes “Circle of Life,” “Hakuna Matata,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” and “He Lives in You.” Its Original Broadway Cast Recording received the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, and the production won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The touring production has brought the show to audiences across North America since 2002.
